With the complexity and wordiness of each sentence that structured the novel from the beginning, I knew that it would be tough to get through this book. As I slowly started to pick up what was going on, the text shifted introducing a new scene. The tension to detail that the author places throughout the narrative is intricately established, making this novel one of the hardest text I have read. The novel revolves around a single day in the life of Clarissa, who is self-reflective and ponders about the past. She seems sentimental, at times happy with her life and other times solemnly let down through her conscious. The novel fluctuates between the stream of consciousness between characters as they all gather towards the end of the novel a party Clarissa plans. The point of view is mainly focused on Clarissa; however, two other characters whom are Peter and Septimus (key characters). This novel constructs through the idea of the characters and their relationship with the mind and world. (Psychology?)

After watching the film, I thought it was generalized, depicting racism in a neighborhood where minorities predominantly reside. As the film begins, the setting is developed as new characters are introduced. These characters are bland, however, have distinct personalities. Through those characters, we are able to see the racial conflict that obstructs throughout the film. There are several instances of racism that gradually pick up towards the climax. Unnecessary racial concerns are portrayed as Buggin Out takes matters into violence as he notices the wall of fame at Sal’s Pizzeria has no pictures of African Americans. As the summer heat blazes the streets of Bed-Stuy, the people start to discriminate the different races and even within themselves. As radio Raheem walks through the streets blasting his boombox, all i could think of was how metaphorically, the music was portrayed as the actions to foreshadow. Towards the end when the mood is set cool in the evening when things start to settle down, the climax of the movie approaches. This starts a fight leading to the death of radio Raheem by the police officials. As the mob starts to riot, there is a scene in where the firemen are more concerned in hosing the people rather than taking out the flame; famously seen in the civil rights movements. As the tension arises, the people act out into violence, which makes matters worse. There were two quotes in the films that I did not understand. First was when Buggin Out says, “Stay black” and when the korean grocery owner says “I am black”. Even though the korean grocery owner said that to show he was equal to them, I wondered if he it that just to make his point across to the African Americans. For Buggin Out, I thought he was ignorant and was racial himself more than him portraying to stand for what is right. I think Spike Lee represents this film more in a opinionated way in which he does get the point across, but in an ambiguous way.

Midnight Cowboy

While watching this film, I felt pity for the Texan, Joe Buck, who came out to seek a unrealistic life in the city. With confidence and full of pride, he never grew a sense that the life he was leading was that of distortion. He had high hopes that he was able to pick up any wealthy woman, being a “stud” in the streets. Unsuccessful and without shame he still attempted to full fill the very littlest of his dreams with Ratso, the very man who conned him of his money. Throughout the film it was evident from the flashbacks that he had a haunting past which had somewhat corrupted him and gave part into his sexual nature. The film had many characteristics and it was interesting to watch. With a mentality like Joe Buck, its never possible to make it through the rough edges of NYC.

While taking a cab from West 14th to St. Marks, I couldnt stop thinking of the speeding citation that I had received during the winter break. Maybe it was because it had been a while since I had been in a car again, but the thought overwhelmed me as I knew I had a good chance of having my licenses suspended or even the thought of paying a decent fine. Going 33mph over the limit is what my friends call “hella speedy”. Its especially difficult to know that having a court date on your mothers birthday is an odd chance. Gladly I dont have to appear in front of the judge as my father takes my replacement. This thought of remorse will be over in a few hours as I call D-day which happens to be today…

After finishing the novel, I was not able to fully grasp what the book was about. With the city in thirteen parts, each had a series of vignettes, meditations, and personal memories. As I was reading I felt as if my eyes followed word by word but my mind grew blank. I would have trouble remembering the previous chapter that I read before. In a whole, the novel was about the thoughts and experiences of longtime residents and of newcomers who visioned making NYC their home.

After watching the film, all I could think of was how long and bland the film was. It was like listening to a a long joke but without a good punch line to end it off. As Levitch ranted on about what he sees and what he thinks of his life in the city, I kept thinking this guy was a delusional raconteur. However, I did think Speed was provincial as well as philosophical as he went on about how the city is a living organism and his relationship with it.

I realized that the city gets pretty old after living here for a full semester. As I would talk to my friends about school, they would always tell me how lucky I was to be attending school in the big apple. At first I had to agree but as I came up for second semester, I realized that the city is a repeating cycle and theres a chances theres a change for once. I now see nyc as a magician who captures a new wave of audience and bores those who already seen his tricks.

It’s hard to comment on Elizabeth Bishop’s poem, The Man-Moth, because the poem as a whole is not clear. It is evident however, Bishop uses a sense of emotion to describe the Man-Moth’s desires and identity. For instance, “Each Night he must be carried through artificial tunnels and dream recurrent dreams.” It feels as if he wanders through his mind feeling misplaced in this world, onlooking towards the moon and spacing out while traveling in the train. In the second stanza, “He emerges from an opening under the edges of one of the sidewalks and nervously begins to scale the faces of the buildings”, I feel there is a parallel relationship to what is reality and his own imagination. I felt as if the last stanza related to the beginning of the poem as a flashlight to his eyes potrays the moonlight. There is a corelation to the shadows that follow him to the dark pupils, as he closes his eyes, in both times of the poem. Its towards the last sentence, which I am unable to comprehend the poem.
